ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

1. Master of Business Administration

The two years MBA degree programme equips students with skills and understanding of the administration of public and private enterprises. The programme also enables different people from other fields, to acquire knowledge in the Accounting, Finance, Marketing and Human Resources so that they can make better decisions on their investment, workplaces and improve their careers.

The MBA programme offers specialization in four courses: i. Accounting ii. Finance iii. Human Resource Management iv. Marketing Management

Programme Objectives

i. To meet the ever growing demand for higher education training in business administration

ii. To enable students to demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of business and how this relates to society

iii. To demonstrate professional competence that will be used in meeting the human and business needs today

iv. To prepare candidates to become future business research oriented graduates

v. To enable candidates to develop into competent professionals recognized for their specialized knowledge and serve the society

Entry Requirements

i) Holder of Bachelor Degree in any field with an average of “B” or a minimum GPA of not less than 2.8 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

ii) Holder of Advanced Diploma in any field with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

iii) Holder of Professional qualification such as CPA (T), CSP (T), NBAA, or ACCA holders; OR

iv) Holder of Postgraduate Diploma in any field with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0.

2. Masters of Arts in Economics

This is a two years programme that enables candidates to understand, analyze and apply advanced micro and macro-economic theories in the current environment that will enable them to meet the global economic challenges.

Objective of the Programme

To enable candidates to understand, analyze and apply advanced micro and macro-economic theories in the current environment that will enable them to meet the global economic challenges. The objectives of each course and expected learning outcomes are clearly stipulated in the respective course outlines.

Organization of the Programme

The programme will run for two years. Students will do a coursework for a period of three semesters, two are meant to cover core courses including a course on research methodology. The third semester will cover elective courses and each candidate will have to select two electives that will be taught in one semester. The first half of the semester will cover part I of each of the electives and part II of the electives will be taught in the second half of the semester. However, the final examination for the two courses (for parts I and II) will be done at the end of the semester. Upon completion of the coursework, students will be required to develop proposals that will enable them to conduct research work, leading to dissertation writing.

Entry Requirements

i) Holder of Bachelor Degree in Economics or any other related field with an average of “B” or with a GPA of not less than 2.8 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

ii) Holder of Bachelor Degree in any related field with a GPA of not less than 2.7 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution plus five years of work experience; OR

iii) Holder of Advanced Diploma in Economics with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

iv) Holder of Postgraduate Diploma in the related field with an average of “B” or a GPA of not less than 3.0 from a recognized Higher Learning Institution; OR

v) Applicant with unclassified Bachelor Degree the GPA should be computed and criteria should apply.

3. Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy (PGDA) for CPA - Module E & F

Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy (PGDA) is a one-year programme of two semesters, designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in accounting necessary for higher learning and accountancy career development.

Programme Objectives

i. The programme is intended to integrate the accountancy discipline as part of the overall management and accommodation of change. It aims at developing students’ skills and understanding of contemporary financial reporting, international dimension of financial management, and dynamics of corporate strategy formulation and implementation.

ii. The programme has been re-designed so that CPA syllabi of Modules E and F of the CPA Syllabus are covered in semester One and Two.

iii. The programme also prepares students to undertake studies in higher degrees.

Entry Requirements

i) Holder of Bachelor Degree or Advanced Diploma in Accountancy and Finance or any other related field with an average of “C” or a minimum GPA of 2.0.

4. Postgraduate Diploma in Finance (PGDF)

Postgraduate Diploma in Finance (PGDF) is a one-year programme of two semesters, designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in finance necessary for higher learning and finance career development.

Programme Objectives

i. To provide education and training to financial analysts, planners and related cadres.

ii. The course prepares students to participate effectively in financial related expertise especially now with emerging capital markets and transactions.

iii. The programme also prepares students to undertake studies in higher degrees.

Entry Requirements

i) Holder of Bachelor Degree or Advanced Diploma in Accountancy and Finance or any other related field with an average of “C” or a minimum GPA of 2.0.

5. Bachelor of Arts in Economics

This is a three years programme which seeks to impart knowledge that will empower students to take on challenging positions in global business, finance or the public sector in fields such as international market research, global mutual funds or policy evaluation.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E) with at least two principal passes and one of which must be Economics. They must have at least four (4) credit passes in the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E “O” level) including Mathematics and Economics. In additional, the applicant must have scored in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A- Level) a total of 4.0 points or more in appropriate subjects at the same sitting; OR

ii) Candidates must hold a Diploma in Banking or Economics and Finance or Business Management or Accountancy with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from an institution recognized by the University and or by Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).

6. Bachelor of Business Administration

This three years programme challenges students to examine the responsibilities of the accountant and other business professionals in contemporary society.

The Bachelor of Business Administration programme offers specialization in five courses:

i. Accounting

ii. Banking and Finance

iii. Marketing

iv. Procurement and Logistics

v. Human Resource Management

I. Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting:

Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting is a three years’ programme of two semesters, designed to equip students with relevant knowledge and skills in accounting necessary for higher learning and accountancy career development. The programme accommodates changes in accounting profession and business world today.

Changes in accounting professional which resulted in the National Board of Accountants and Auditors reviewed its syllabi. The Board grants heavy exemption to SAUT graduates in Accounting who wish to attempt their examination. This makes it necessary to match, as far as possible, their syllabi content and our syllabi content in order to qualify for the exemption. Changing our syllabi in line with the NBAA syllabi changes is justified since theirs sheds light on what the profession considers appropriate knowledge for the accountant of today.

Programme Objectives:

i. To prepare graduates with wide business knowledge to face challenges in both job market and business practices

ii. To prepare business graduates who can demonstrate knowledge in accounting field as a professional tool

iii. To prepare business graduates who are responsible citizens with the ability to demonstrate professional competence, social interaction, and SAUT ethical values in their accounting career.

II. Bachelor of Business Administration in Banking and Finance:

Bachelor of Business Administration in Banking and Finance is a three years’ programme of two semesters, designed to equip students with relevant knowledge and skills in finance necessary for higher learning and finance career development.

The banking industry has tremendously grown in this country. The Industry requires manpower from institutions of higher learning in Tanzania. The University intends to taken this challenge and be among institutions that will train requisite manpower for the growing banking industry. Acceptance of this challenge has made it necessary to introduce Banking and Finance programme.

Programme Objectives:

i. To prepare graduates with wide business knowledge to cope with changing International financial transactions

ii. To prepare business graduates who can demonstrate knowledge in banking and finance

iii.To prepare business graduates who are responsible citizens with the ability to demonstrate professional competence, social interaction, and SAUT ethical values in their banking and finance career.

Entry Requirements:

i) Candidates must be holders of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E) with at least two principal passes from any of the following subject combinations; ECA, EGM, PCM, PGM, HGE, PCB and CBG. They must have at least four (4) credit passes in the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E “O” level) including Mathematics and English. In additional, the applicant must have scored in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A- Level) a total of 4.0 points or more in appropriate subjects at the same sitting; OR

ii) Candidates must hold a Diploma in Business Administration with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from an institution recognized by the University and or by Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).

7. Bachelor of Science in Procurement and Supply Chain Management

This is a three years programme designed to enable students to discover the keys to successful supply chain management and how to deliver superior managerial performance with significant business impact in the field. It facilitates students to master skills required in managing the procurement and supply chain cycle.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E) with at least two principal passes from any of the following subject; Economics, Accountancy, Mathematics, Commerce, Physics, History, Biology, Chemistry or Geography. They must have at least four (4) credit passes in the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E “O” level) including Mathematics and English. In additional, the applicant must have scored in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A- Level) a total of 4.0 points or more in appropriate subjects at the same sitting; OR

ii) Candidates must hold a Diploma in Procurement and Supply Chain Management with minimum GPA of 3.0 from an institution recognized by the University and or by Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).

8. Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management

This three year programme ensures that students are equipped with necessary competencies. In this way they will be able to play roles requiring high level of skills, knowledge and understanding. In due time, they will be able to take responsibility for their areas of specialization to prepare them to be Tourism professionals. To address these challenges, learning and leading organizations and stakeholders in the tourism industry seek experienced and competent managers who are trained in the dynamics of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E) with at least two principal passes with a subsidiary in Mathematics. They must have at least four (4) credit passes in the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E “O” level) including Mathematics and English. In additional, the applicant must have scored in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A- Level) a total of 4.0 points or more in appropriate subjects at the same sitting; OR

ii) Candidates must hold a Diploma in Tourism or Wildlife Management or Wildlife Tourism or Culture Heritage Management with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from an institution recognized by the University and or by Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).

9. Ordinary Diploma in Accountancy

This is a two years’ programme designed to cater for accountants in profit and non-profit organizations. The programme covers four semesters of 17 weeks each. It requires the candidates to successfully complete a total of 45 credit points. There will be a field project in this programme. The field period will take place between the first and second year. Students will be required to write field report which will weigh 5 credit points.

The programme is designed to provide job based training to technicians to serve in both public and private organizations. It is prepared in such a way that it meets the growing demand for well trained and skilled technicians who can contribute greatly in helping organizations acquire and manage material resources which represent enormous amount of money so that in the end they will be able to achieve their corporate objectives.

Programme Objectives:

i. It is expected that on completion of the Diploma, students will be able to demonstrate a range of cognitive, intellectual skills and knowledge not only in accounting, but also in a number of areas such as Business Environment, Markets, Customers, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Economics, Information Systems, Communication and Information Technology, Business Policy and Strategy and Contemporary and pervasive issues.

ii. In the particular accounting context, among other things, students will learn how to: prepare financial reports, operational budgets and income tax returns; manage budgets and forecasts; administer accounts payable receivable; establish and maintain accounting information systems; implement and maintain internal control procedures; and monitor corporate governance activities.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E) with at least one principal pass in Mathematics, Commerce or Accountancy and two subsidiary pass; OR

ii) Candidate must posses the National Technical Award (NVA Level 4) in Accountancy and or related field.

10. Ordinary Diploma in Business Administration

This is a two years’ programme designed to cater for administrators in profit and non-profit organizations. The programme is designed to provide job based training to technicians to serve in both public and private organizations. It is prepared in such a way that it meets the growing demand for well trained and skilled technicians who can contribute greatly in helping organizations acquire and manage material resources which represent enormous amount of money so that in the end they will be able to achieve their corporate objectives.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E) with at least one principal pass in Mathematics, Commerce or Accountancy and two subsidiary pass; OR

ii) Candidates must have completed at least form four (“O” level) with fourpasses in Non- Religious studies and Basic Technician Certificate in Business Administration, Marketing and Public relations from a registered institution.

11. Ordinary Diploma in Procurement and Supply

This is a two-year programme designed to cater for technicians in procurement and supply chain management. The programme is designed to provide job based training to technicians to serve in both public and private organizations. It is prepared in such a way that it meets the growing demand for well trained and skilled technicians who can contribute greatly in helping organizations acquire and manage material resources which represent enormous amount of money so that in the end they will be able to achieve their corporate objectives.

Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E) with at least one principal pass and two subsidiary pass; OR

ii) Candidate must posses the National Technical Award (NVA Level 5) in Procurement and or related field.

12. Basic Technician Certificate in Accountancy

The Certificate in Accountancy is a one-year programme which introduces students into a wide range of accounting careers in all types of economic organizations. The program stresses basic conceptual knowledge in all fields of accounting and finance as an essential foundation for an effective accounting career.

The focus of the programme is to introduce students on the principles, concepts, and procedures of measuring, analyzing, and communicating accounting information for decision making and management of the business. Ethical behavior is stressed throughout the program to highlight its importance to the maintenance of public trust in accounting and finance professionals.

Programme Objectives:

i. To enable the student understand and apply financial and accounting techniques

ii. To introduce students to the basic understanding of scientific approach to manage human resource

iii.To prepare graduates to be responsible citizen with an ability to demonstrate professional and ethical values in their carrier.

iv. To prepare students to be able to apply commercial, economical and procurement principles in managing business.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) with at least four passes in Non- Religious subjects including Basic Mathematics and English Language; OR

ii) Candidates must be holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) and posses the National Vocation Award (NVA Level 3) in relevant field.

13. Basic Technician Certificate in Health Administration

The Certificate in Health Administration programme intends to provide trainees with sufficient knowledge and expertise to administer health centers, as well as small to medium-size hospitals and other health care programs. Ethical behavior is stressed throughout the program to highlight its importance to the maintenance of public trust in health and health professionals.

Programme Objectives:

i. To enable the students learn various approaches to systems of health care and to understand how they may affect overall planning and decision making in the day to day administration of health care services.

ii. To enable students acquire basic skills in the collection, processing, presentation and interpretation of simple numerical and statistical data in their separate applications to business situations.

iii. To enable students acquire introductory knowledge of basic economic theories, economic analysis and economic reasoning and development of skills in effective use of health resources.

iv. To enable students to understand the general principles of law and how they relate to health administration.

v. To enable the students acquire the knowledge needed for the administration of health and health- related organizations.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) with at least four passes or any equivalent qualification.

14. Basic Technician Certificate in Procurement and Supply

The one-year course aims at equipping students with basic tools for performing logistics and supply management functions.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) with at least four passes in Non- Religious subjects.

15. Basic Technician Certificate in Business Administration

This is a one-year programme designed to cater for administrators in profit and non-profit organizations. The programme is designed to provide job based training to administrators to serve in both public and private organizations. It is prepared in such a way that it meets the growing demand for well trained and skilled administrators who can contribute greatly in helping organizations acquire and manage material resources which represent enormous amount of money so that in the end they will be able to achieve their corporate objectives.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) wih at least four passes in Non- Religious subjects including Basic Mathematics; OR

ii) Candidates must be holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) with at least three passes and National Vocation Award (NVA Level 3) VETA Certificate.

16. Basic Technician Certificate in Tourism Enterprise Management

Certificate in Tourism Enterprise Management is a one-year programme. Certificate in Tourism Enterprise Management is UQF level 6 because the holder of Certificate in Tourism Enterprise Management will have the following knowledge, skills and competencies.

Knowledge:

The holder of Certificate in Tourism Enterprise Management should be able to: -

i. Understad basic knowledge of the scope and main areas of tourism industry and its related field.

ii. Have knowledge of various tourism resources and opportunities available in tourism industry.

iii. Understand main theories, principles and concepts of tourism

iv. Acquire the routine operational knowledge in management of tourism enterprises.

Skills:

The holder of Certificate in Tourism Enterprise Management CTEM should be able to:-

i. To gather, analyze, present routine information, ideas, concepts and data concerning tourism industry

ii. To apply skills acquired to respond beyond routine functions in tourism field.

Competencies:

The holder of Certificate in Tourism Enterprise Management should be able to:-

i. Use knowledge and skills to evaluate and formulate arguments and solutions to problems relating to tourism enterprises.

ii. Use knowledge and skills to communicate the products, services and other work of enterprises to public and customers accurately and reliably.

Entry Requirements

i) Candidates must be holders of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) with at least four passes or any equivalent qualification.

MESSAGE FROM THE FACULTY DEAN

Welcome to the Faculty of Business and Economics. The Faculty currently has four departments:

i. Department of Accountancy and Finance;

ii. Department of Economics;

iii. Department of Procurement and Logistics, Marketing and Human Resource Management and;

iv. Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

The Faculty has a variety of Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Non-degree programmes accredited by NACTE i.e. Certificate and Diploma programmes. Our programmes are in line with the demand of the public and private sector including the self-economic business sub-sector. The programmes and courses are explained in details in this prospectus.

To abstain from substandard performance student are encouraged to work hard, but closely with the faculty professors and other lecturers/instructors who are well versed in the courses they teach.
